The Dominican Republic is located in the north-central region of the Caribbean Sea. It is bordered by Haiti to the north, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago to the east, French Guiana and Brazil to the south, and Haiti and Nicaragua to the west. The country lies on the eastern slopes of Mount La Herradura, which rises to an elevation of 1,845 feet (560 meters). The territory consists of more than 10 islands—the largest being Santo Domingo de Los Salvadores (Los Salvo)—and over 400 caymans or small islands. Dominica is also home to two volcanoes: Mona (1,728 ft./553 m.) and Azua (1,014 ft./309 m.).

The Dominican Republic has a population of approximately 10 million people. The majority of the population is composed of descendants of the Taíno Indians, who were the first inhabitants of the island. Spanish and African slaves also played a significant role in the development of the country. The official language is Spanish, but English is also widely spoken. The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism. The economy is based on agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.
